Our History

The story of Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium

Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium was founded in 1894 as Riverview Park Zoo. It has grown significantly over the years, becoming one of the world's leading zoos in terms of size, scope, and conservation efforts. In 1963, Margaret Hitchcock Doorly donated $750,000 to the zoo in memory of her late husband, Henry Doorly, leading to its renaming. The zoo has since expanded to include groundbreaking exhibits like the Desert Dome, which opened in 2002, and the Scott Aquarium, which was renovated in 2012. The zoo's commitment to conservation and education has made it a beloved institution in Omaha and a must-visit destination for animal lovers worldwide.
