Komodo Dragon

The Komodo dragon is the largest living species of lizard, native to the Indonesian islands of Komodo, Rinca, Flores, and Gili Motang. These formidable reptiles can grow up to 3 meters (10 feet) in length and weigh around 70 kilograms (154 pounds). Their robust bodies are covered in rough, durable scales, and they possess a long, muscular tail. Komodo dragons have a keen sense of smell, which they use to detect carrion from several kilometers away. They are apex predators, primarily feeding on large prey such as deer, pigs, and even water buffalo. Their hunting strategy involves a stealthy approach followed by a sudden burst of speed, using their powerful jaws and sharp teeth to deliver a venomous bite. This venom contains anticoagulants that prevent blood clotting, weakening their prey. Komodo dragons are solitary creatures, coming together only to breed and feed. They are known for their impressive endurance, capable of traveling long distances in search of food. Interestingly, Komodo dragons can reproduce through parthenogenesis, a form of asexual reproduction, allowing females to produce offspring without a male. This adaptation is particularly useful in isolated environments where mates are scarce.
